THE INFERNO OF DANTE ; 9th circles of hell
Cover reads:
Robert Pinsky’s acclaimed verse translation of the Inferno shows the contemporary reader why Dante is considered a poet of great power, intensity and vision. When this translation was published in hardcover in 1994, reviewers predicted that it would become the standard English version of the Inferno. “Many translations are available” Peter McGrath obserced in Newsweek. “For many tastes, however, Pinsky will supplant them”
Pinsky’s translation is faithful to the original, stringly readable and rapid and various in style. Pinsky has preserced the form of Dante’s poem, terza rima, without disorting the flow of English using slant rhyme and near rhyme to approximate the sweeping formal engery of the Italian.
As distinguished Dante scholar John Freccero explains in his forward, Dante wrote “not in Latin as one might have expected, but in the everyday speech of his city. Ultimately, this is the justicication for another contemporary translation, aside from tis power and extraordinary accuracy… Robert Pinsky renews for us a Dante for our own time and does so with admirable carity and grace.”
Pinsky’s translation is presented alongside Dante’s Itlatian text, and accompanied by notes and brief commentary. The volume is illustrated with thrity-five monotypes by the noted artist Michael Mazur.
My impression:
This is the most suitable start for a new reader of Dante’s works and students as well. I found the brief explanations for the background of many quoted names in Date’s works extremely useful and definitely better my understanding of the story itself. In the stories, you get to meet and speak to some of the souls and everyone evoked a sense of sadness, pity and regret. Its a frightening yet captivating read, sometimes I even find myself… imagining being in Date’s position wandering through hell with Virgil. I love this book!
